Lights, crackers and rangoli, that’s what makes Diwali the most fun and joyous festival of India. On the occasion of Diwali, people decorate their home with a variety of colours, rangolis and burn crackers which light up the sky in all possible hues. One of the most popular decoration items on the occasion of Diwali is the Diwali Lantern which is known in India as Aakash Kandil. It is made using many bright and colourful papers. Here is a simple and easy way to make a beautiful Diwali Lantern at home.

Steps to follow:

1

The first step to make a diwali lantern is to cut the dark coloured paper into a rectangle of a width 8 to 9 inches (20.32cm to 22.86cm). The length should be such that when you roll it into a cylinder, it should have a diameter of 6 to 7 inches (15.24cm to 17.78cm).

2

Cut a thin strip of any fluorescent paper. Since I didn't have any fluroscent paper, I used a shiny beaded strip and pasted it on the top and bottom of the cylinder of the Diwali lantern.

3

Next, cut the light coloured paper into a square of 4.5 by 4.5 inches (11.43cm). Cut the dark coloured paper into squares of 3.5 by 3.5 inches (8.9cm).

4

Use the light colored square as base and paste the dark squares on it exactly in the middle so that it is exactly 1 inch smaller than the dark paper from every side.

Now, take two opposite corners of the square and stick them so that they form a cylindrical form and then paste them on the cylinder prepared in step 1 in such a way that the open corners are on the length of the cylinder as shown in the figure.

Now, cut all the thin paper ribbons so that they are of the same length. These ribbons look best if their length is 3 times more than the length of the lantern cylinders. Stick these ribbons inside the base of the cylinder. Hang your diwali lantern inside your home or outside your home.

Happy Diwali!
