Salt dough is an alternative to clay or Plasticine which is very economical as it can be made at home with products that are commonly found in the kitchen like flour, salt and water. This type of paste can be molded and used in different crafts. You only need a little imagination and time. You'll need:
  • For salt dough: 3 parts flour, 1 part of salt, 1 part water
  • Wooden board
  • Plastic bag
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Measuring Cup
  • Colouring (optional)
Steps to follow:

To start making our salt dough you have to mix 3 parts flour and 1 part salt using a spoon and a large bowl. Fold the mix well and slowly add cold water.

Continue mixing until the salt dough does not stick to the bowl surface. This type of material is perfect for children to produce all kinds of figures at home. You can add coloring to get a more varied array of colors for your salt dough.

Put a little flour over a wooden board then take the dough from the bowl and place over the surface and begin to work it.

Work the salt dough for 10 minutes until the dough becomes soft, elastic and warm to the touch.

Place the dough in a plastic bag for 1 hour so it ends up with just the right consistency.

After this time remove the dough from the plastic bag and you will have your salt dough ready to be molded, chopped and cropped for use in whatever craft you want. Remember that once the desired figure is made it should be baked to harden it. Then you can paint it in any color you like.

  • Careful to not add too much water because otherwise the dough becomes sticky and very difficult to mold out. Use flour which is not whole wheat. The salt dough can be kept for a week in an airtight container or plastic bag in the refrigerator. When removing the salt dough from the fridge work it for some minutes so it becomes elastic, warm and pliable again.
