How to Make Floating Candles at Home

Surely you've seen more than once a house decorated with floating candles and this decorative element is now more fashionable than ever. They are usually put as centerpieces to decorate for a special event or they also can be used in weddings or placed in a corner of your house that you want to illuminate with a unique and very personal touch. In this OneHowTo article, we will tell you how to make floating candles at home and also, we will give you some decorating ideas to make out the most of them.

Steps to follow:
1

First we will tell you how to make floating candles if you want to prepare yourself and get well, they are a unique creation and tailored to your tastes. To do this, you need the following materials:

  • 340 grams of Paraffin (12 ounces)
  • The essential oil you like best
  • Moulds to make the candles
  • 12 wicks (you can get them at any craft store)
  • 60 drops of essential oil of your choice

Once you have all the necessary materials, we start with the preparation. The first thing to do is to put water in a pan to create a boiling water bath. Inside the boiling water bath, you'll have to add the wax until it melts completely. When melted, you will have to include the essential oil and stir to mix both the ingredients.

Then you'll have to pour this mixture into the molds for making candles slowly to prevent air bubbles from forming. Leave it to stand a few minutes and when you see the wax starts to set, insert the wicks. Now you have to let it cool completely. Ready! You now have your floating candles made at home.

Although if you do not want to make the candles yourself, you can also go to any shop and buy them ready-made. Another very original way to decorate with candles is by the idea that we propose here in this OneHowTo article that shows you how to make hanging lanterns.

Once we have the candles, there are different ways to decorate your home or a table with them. We will show you the most original and elegant OneHowTo ways of doing it.

A very simple way to decorate with floating candles is what we propose below. You only have to take some crystal glasses that you have at home or glass containers that have a rounded shape. Adds stones inside the cup, fill it with water and place the candle in the water. This is perfect to decorate a hall, for example, or for a more intimate touch to any room in your home.

Another good idea to decorate with floating candles is to use a glass bowl that is large (whatever you have in the kitchen for baking or salads could be useful). Then add enough water and add flowers to give a relaxing look to the piece. See the images here for ideas and inspiration. This is perfect to decorate centerpieces and to surprise your guests with an elegant idea.

This is a great idea if you want to make an original DIY Christmas centerpiece, just add poinsettia flowers and leaves instead.

You can also take advantage of everyday objects, such as a large glass of wine, to decorate your home with floating candles. This idea serves for every corner of your home that you want to highlight with a twist. The same goes for weddings, engagement parties, birthdays as they add an original and very elegant twist.

In the attached picture you can see how an option is added into the interior of the berries (blueberries, strawberries, etc.) and the other cup is then filled with sea shells, scallops, and so on. The truth is that you can put anything you like inside (leaves, dried pineapple, flowers, etc.).

One option is also to perfect adding candles to long glasses (which are often used for cocktails or combined drinks). This idea may be very useful in areas that you want to illuminate in your house or, as you can see in the picture, they are also a good choice to join three glasses of different sizes and can achieve a very elegant center table.

In the option shown below we have opted to introduce elegant twigs inside the glass and to place the candle above it all, as a perfectly separate lighting decoration. Look at it. The result is simply beautiful.
