How to Make a Cone with Paper

A cone is a tridimensional geometric shape formed by rotating a right-angled triangle around one of its sides. The circle formed by the other side is called the base of the cone, while the upper extremity is called the vertex.

In this oneHOWTO article we'll show you, step by step, how to make a cone with paper. You will find it useful to explain geometry, to use as a container for candy or other treats, or - if painted - as a tower top for a cardboard castle. The possibilities are endless!

You'll need:
Steps to follow:

The first step is to copy this cone template onto some paper, card or cardboard. You can also print it if you like. Do it in any size that you want.

Cut out the cone template with scissors, making sure you follow the lines and the folds so we can later glue the parts together.

Fold along all the lines of the template, so that the small spikes point upwards. Try joining the cone before gluing so that you're sure about where each flap will go.

Put glue on the longest flat to form a pointed cone.

That's the shape of the cone made. Now put glue on the small tabs (triangles) and stick the base of cone down. To make it easier, twist it so that you can put weight on the tabs.

You have now made your very own 3D paper cone!

  • If you're not able to draw it out, copy the template image and paste it into a Word document. Make it as big as you want and print it out.
  • You can make your cone using coloured card. Choose a colour you like!
  • Before you start putting the glue on, try it in position without the glue first to see if it fits. Once you're sure about where you're going to stick it, put glue on the tab and stick it together. Do the same on the other tabs.
