Today we are going to show you how to make a lampshade with different objects you may have hanging around at home so you can choose the the option that best suits you.

Lampshade with leftover yarn

The first item to make a lampshade will be any excess wool you may have hanging around at home, may it be because you are a knitting fan or because your grandmother gave it to you in hope you would use it for something useful. Just follow these steps:

  1. Take water and fevicol in a bowl in equal amounts, and mix well
  2. Dip the wool or yarn in this mixture, and keep it soaked for one hour
  3. Blow up a balloon as big the size as you want the lampshade to be
  4. Wrap the balloon with the wet wool or yarn
  5. Tie its end tightly. Make sure to wrap the entire balloon, except for a small hole at the base or top to accommodate the bulb holder.
  6. Once you have covered the balloon completely with the yarn or wool, allow it to dry properly
  7. After it dries completely, poke a pin, burst the balloon and take it out

Your lampshade is now ready to fit. Now you only need to fix the bulb holder with the bulb, wire it properly, and your table lamp is ready to lit up.

Lampshade with old photo negatives

Another creative idea is to use old photo negatives to create a lampshade. To create this you will need an old, round lampshade wire with the bulb holder incorporated , or you can use your own wire to make your own rounded shape (take into account you will have to add a bulb holder too).

  1. Use a 5cm strip of cardboard and stick it with superglue to the wire.
  2. Cut 5 cm thinner pieces of wire and bend them into a hook. Then, you'll need to hook them through the cardboard evenly so they go the whole way round.
  3. Gather the old photo negatives and hook them to the other end of the hooks so they hang down vertically. Make sure you hook them from the center so they hang down straight.
  4. Now you will only need to attach the lampshade to hooks and the bulb holder to enjoy this original craft. You can also do this with old slide pictures, though you will need to hook one to the other so you'll need more thin wire.

Lampshade with plastic bottles

Another great idea is to use plastic bottles to create your lampshade. The best thing about this idea is that you have as many possibilities as your imagination allows you.

  1. Cut 3 water bottles into halves vertically, getting rid of the top and bottom parts so all the halves are the same shape.
  2. If you like, you can spray-paint them in your favorite shade.
  3. Then, you'll need to glue the halves together side by side making a round shape. You need to make sure that the circle you create is the same size as the wire hoops (one on the top and one on the bottom) that will support your lamp and bulb support.

Lampshade with glass bottles

Glass bottles are also a popular waste material which we can reuse. This is a bit more difficult to do if you are being helped by children as you will be using glass and fire.

  1. First of all, you'll need to cut the bottom part of the glass. To do so you can check out our tutorial on how to cut glass.
  2. Once the bottom part of the glass is cut and filed, you will need to glue the bulb socket to the bottom of the bottle's neck. Our advice is to spread the glue in the bottle so the socket is in the place where you want it to be. Wait for an hour for it to dry, connect the cable to the socket and you're done!

As this will be a very small lampshade, you can create several of these to make a magnificent, multi-light lampshade like the one you can see in the picture.

Lampshade with old pegs

If you have old and rusty wooden clothes pegs then this craft is ideal. It will give your room a cool and Scandinavian touch. Take a look at the following procedure to make it:

  1. Use a rounded semi-hard base such as an old clock or hard cardboard.
  2. Get two pegs and stick them side by side with super glue. (Make sure it's the side you press to open the peg).
  3. Stick the next peg to it, making 5 rows of 12 pegs.
  4. Next, put five new pegs together creating a star shape from their tips and unite them with hot glue.
  5. Let's start building the structure by adding each of the 5 rows and sticking them vertically in the round surface.
  6. Once the peg walls are dry, stick the star-shaped pegs to the top of each of the peg walls.
  7. Create a small hole in the round base you you can add the bulb's cable through it and pass it through.
  8. If you like you can also add a base to the lamp too.

Here you have a perfect table lampshade or one that you can hang from your ceiling too!
